Second Enlightenment and Whitehead
An Experiment in Animation
Our animated video is a little rough, and sometimes sounds a little more like a postmodern poem, or a song by Bob Dylan. The emphasis is often on the wrong syllable. Our cartoon characters have minds of their own.
So please be patient. This is JJB's first attempt at an animation. Our aim is to present the "Second Enlightenment" of which scholars such as Zhihe Wang and Meijun Fan speak in their pioneering book: The Second Enlightenment (Peking University Press, 2011). At present the book is only in Chinese, but this video gives you an overview of their claims.
We are using the video as a learning unit for a globally-networked, digitally-assisted course being taught in China and the United States on constructive postmodern thinking. Constructive postmodernism is the phrase Wang and Fan use for "process philosophy" in China. We give you a sense for the meaning of the phrase in the video.
At JJB we would not have been able to create anything at all, were it not for Emily Frost, a bright young thinker who had "second enlightenment" intuitions long before she ever heard the phrase second enlightenment. She does not defend the halting speech of our characters, but they would not speak at all without her help. Thanks, Emily!
