Nightly Jitterbug Lessons for your Dad
"You can't watch jitterbug and
keep scowling. You just can't do it!"
-- Angel Jitterbug, 1947
Sometimes, when people scowl too much, it's because they haven't had a chance to see enough joy in life. As I explained to you in my earlier letter, I'm a little worried about your dad in this regard. I worry that when he goes to his private quarters at 6:30 every night, keen on watching the news, he may not have occasion to laugh or just feel joy. This will make him even more angry and depressed. He needs to laugh.
Of course that's not enough. He also needs a really good spiritual friend: someone who is not impressed with his position, power, or money, but who will listen to him as a friend. And someone who truly loves him.
This can't be you. You're too close to him. It can't really be his so-called "spiritual guides." They are all of the zealous type. They want to turn him into an evangelical Christian who think they have the only way. And I'm pretty sure they're a bit star-struck with such proximity to power. Lord help us. It will be much better if he just sticks to being a Presbyterian.
But as Jesus once said, human beings cannot live by soul friends alone. They also need to feel the sheer joy of being alive, the sheer joy of, well, jazz dancing.
Ivanka, please share this video with your dad. I think he'd like it. He would feel the joy. I know somebody in DC that can give him lessons on the side, privately. If he learned just one or two steps, and kind of just let go to some music every night, just for fun, it would go a long way toward gentling his spirit and bringing a smile to his face. Prayer helps, but there's so much more than prayer. Jitterbugging, for example.
I'll help. Call me.
